Festa de Santa Joana Princesa
The Festa de Santa Joana Princesa is one of the most important celebrations in Aveiro, held annually on May 12, the anniversary of the saint’s death and the municipal holiday.
Santa Joana, daughter of King Afonso V, renounced court life to dedicate herself to faith, living in the Monastery of Jesus, where the Aveiro Museum / Santa Joana is located today. Her life of devotion and charity made her a symbol of the city, and she was beatified in 1693.
The festival includes a solemn procession that travels through the streets of Aveiro, attracting both the faithful and visitors, along with various cultural and religious activities. This event strengthens the historical and spiritual connection between the city and its patron saint.
